Cycling on the most beautiful gravel roads
In the heart of Scandinavia, where the forests whisper timeless myths and the air reflects in the lakes, lies Småland. This Swedish province is known for the stories of Astrid Lindgren but has much more to offer such as endless roads, beautiful nature and the feeling as if you are alone in the world. Perfect for tourists who take their bike. Are you a cyclist and looking for tips and tricks to get the most out of your gravel rides in Småland? Then read on quickly!
The terrain: nature and unlimited adventure
Småland has a lot to offer due to its varied landscape. Gravel paths meander through dense forests with towering spruce trees, but also over vast hills and past old-fashioned farms. Discovering the gravel roads in this area of Sweden is characterized by a mix of relatively flat sections alternating with very steep climbs. The paths are often remote, so you can enjoy nature and serene tranquility while cycling without worrying about traffic. A word of warning: we cannot guarantee that no curious deer, moose or squirrels will come and have a peek.
The routes: a well-kept secret
At our reception you will find everything you need to know about cycling in the area around the campsite. There are routes available for everyone, so that both the most experienced and the novice cyclist can enjoy themselves along the way. Looking for a round to loosen your legs or in need of a training round with a coffee stop? Everything is possible! The routes are available digitally as a GPX file for your phone, but taking a paper map with you is no problem either.
The equipment: the gravel bike
Although cycling on a racing bike is perfectly possible in the Swedish highlands, the gravel bike or mountain bike is the better equipment. It is important to use equipment that can handle both steep and flat sections, as they can rapidly follow each other. The gravel bike is the perfect compromise here.
For the right grip and the necessary comfort, 35mm and 45mm tires are a safe choice. Choose gears that are suitable for the steep climbs in Småland. Do you have any questions or need advice about the right equipment? Feel free to send us an email, we will be happy to help you.
The bike tour: tips and weather conditions
The best time to go gravel cycling in Småland is from May to September. The weather during these months is perfect for a bike tour. We recommend taking a raincoat with you and preparing yourself by putting on enough layers. You never know... One moment the sun is shining, the next moment the wind picks up and it rains. No problem, you can always take a shortcut home.
Culinary stop: Swedish fika
No bike tour is complete without a coffee break. In Sweden they also have that tradition: the so-called fika moment. The ingredients for a perfect fika are simple: find a cozy local cafe and order a cup of coffee with a Swedish pastry. A perfect energy bomb for the rest of the tour is for example, the kanelbulle or the semla. We will guide you to the best places to enjoy this Swedish tradition.
Astrid Lindgren: a bike ride through a children's story
When you cycle through the forests in Småland, you can easily put yourself in the shoes of one of the most famous children's book writers in the region. Astrid Lindgren grew up in the province and drew inspiration from the endless nature. Her stories about courageous protagonists who are close to nature have left their mark on the area. During the gravel rides, you will not be able to avoid the magical world of Astrid and her legacy.
